BSB has developed the powerful Solar Series batteries providing reliable power back up to pitch motors in wind turbines.

 

To ensure constant power output of a wind turbine at different wind speeds, the blade angle adjustment system has been designed. This automatic adjustment of the rotor blades works electrically using pitch motors. In strong winds, a control system turns the rotor blades around the longitudinal axis out of the wind. When wind speed reaches 25m/s or more, the wind turbine is shut down to prevent damage to the generator. For this purpose, the rotor blades are turned by almost 90° into the feathering position. Batteries back up this power supply so that the pitch system can continuously operate reliably even in the event of a power failure. To be on the safe side, each motor has its own backup battery, which is subjected to very short autonomies with very high discharge currents that can reach to multiple times of rated capacity.

 

For this application with the battery being exposed to shocks and vibrations, BSB has developed the Solar Series Solar12-7 (12V 7Ah) and Solar12-5 (12V 5Ah) types, which are highly reliable and fast recovering after deep discharge because of hybrid Gel technology. And AGM technology makes the operation in almost any position (except overhead) is possible without loss of power, even in moving parts. Special lead-calcium grids ensure a long service life of 3 to 6 years according to EUROBAT, making a replacement outside the usual service intervals not necessary, especially important in the offshore sector, where maintenance costs are very high. The VRLA technology makes water refilling is also not necessary over the entire service life.
